Newport is a May to October yachting hub, not a year round base like Fort Lauderdale or Antibes, and its crew housing scene is sized for that. There is no cluster of dedicated crew houses. Most sources point at the same small handful of places, and the older crew house names still circulating online, Jackies, Moreens and Vickies, all trace to one dead directory site and could not be re verified for 2025 or 2026.
Where crew actually stay
The one true dedicated crew lodging is the Crow's Nest, third floor accommodation at the Seamen's Church Institute on Market Square, downtown on the waterfront. It runs a marine industry rate of USD 90 a night in peak season and USD 70 off season, capped at seven nights, plus standard rooms from USD 148 to 255 a night by bed type and by weekday or weekend. Book by phone or email direct with the institute.
Newport Shipyard keeps crew housing as a named amenity: historically two furnished three bedroom houses and five apartments across the street, let on a one month minimum. That suits somebody settling in for training or daywork, not a week in port.
Poplar House, a guesthouse three blocks from downtown that has been running forty years, has the strongest word of mouth as a budget base for crew job hunting. No fixed minimum stay, phone or text booking only, no published rate card.
William Gyles Guesthouse, the old Newport International Hostel, sits downtown in the yachting village and is budget friendly, but its dorm beds closed in 2019. It is private rooms only now and it is not crew specific.
What a bed costs in 2026
Roughly USD 70 to 100 a night at the low end, which is the Crow's Nest crew rate, up to USD 200 to 250 a night for a private room elsewhere downtown in season. Nothing in this sweep undercuts the Crow's Nest.
How crew actually book
Phone or email direct with each property. None of these run modern online booking. The informal channel is Facebook: the Newport Yacht Crew and Newport Professional Yacht Crew groups carry room share posts, but they need a login and were not fetched here. For a season long room, local estate agents market seasonal rentals to yacht crew alongside summer and military renters.
One caution
The Crow's Nest's own former domain, crowsnestnewport.com, is dead. Book through seamensnewport.org instead. Treat any Newport crew house name found only on old aggregator sites as unverified until it shows a live site or a 2025 or 2026 review.
Where these came from
seamensnewport.org, sites.google.com/site/poplarhousenewport, williamgylesguesthouse.com, newportshipyard.com, hoganassociatesre.com, the 2022 yachting-pages.com guide to crew accommodation in Newport, and mycrewkit.com listings, all checked 19 August 2026.
Where crew stay: 5 places, checked 19 August 2026
| Name | Type | Status | From | Min stay | Distance | Booking | Verified |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Crow's Nest at Seamen's Church InstituteThird-floor seafarer lodging at the Seamen's Church Institute on the downtown waterfront. The institute's own crew/marine-industry rate is $90/night peak, $70/night off-season, capped at 7 nights; standard rooms run $148-$255/night by bed type and weekday/weekend. Credentialed mariners also get 10% off standard rates. | Crew house | USD 70 a night | up to 7 nights | Downtown waterfront; estimated 10-15 min walk to Newport Shipyard docks at 1 Washington St (estimate from street layout, not independently timed) | Phone, Email, Website | 19 Aug 2026 | |
| Newport Shipyard Crew Housing (Safe Harbor)Not a standalone crew house: Safe Harbor's own shipyard historically ran two furnished 3-bedroom houses and five furnished apartments across the street, let with a one-month minimum to crew and marine job-seekers. No public rate card found; a dedicated /crewhousing/ page on the site returns 404 as of this check, so enquire directly with the dock office. Prices left blank because none are published. | Agency run | no published rate | At / adjacent to Newport Shipyard | Email, Phone | 19 Aug 2026 | ||
| Poplar HouseLong-running guesthouse (owner cites 40 years) with a reputation among yacht crew as a budget base while job-hunting; a 2022 industry guide describes no fixed minimum/maximum stay and kitchen/living-room access, but the current site does not repeat those terms. Bookings are by phone/text/WhatsApp only, no online rate card found, so prices are left blank. | Short let | no published rate | Central Newport; secondary listings describe a short walk to downtown, Newport Shipyard and the harbor, but this was not independently distance-verified | Phone, Website | 19 Aug 2026 | ||
| William Gyles Guesthouse (formerly Newport International Hostel)Originally the Newport International Hostel, a dorm-bed hostel from 2002-2019; the dorms are now closed and it operates as private-rooms-only under the William Gyles Guesthouse name. The site confirms it is 'open for the season' as of 5/14/26. No nightly rate is published on the official site at time of check (older, pre-2019 sources cite $20 dorm beds, which no longer apply); book via the site's Availability/Booking link. | Hostel | no published rate | Downtown Newport, a few blocks from America's Cup Ave / Bannister's Wharf; not independently distance-verified | Website, Phone | 19 Aug 2026 | ||
| Hogan Associates Real Estate, seasonal & yacht-crew rentalsLocal real-estate brokerage, not a crew house. Markets Newport/Middletown/Portsmouth rentals to 'summer, winter, military, yacht crews' but the page gives no crew-specific program, pricing, or minimum stay. A route to a season-long room or apartment, not a walk-up option. | Agency run | no published rate | Varies by listing; not a fixed property | Phone, Email | 19 Aug 2026 |

- Jackies Crew House phone number surfaces only via a search-engine AI summary tracing to the defunct americancrewhouses.webs.com directory; no live site and no 2024-2026 listing or review found, likely stale or defunct
- Moreens Crew House same defunct-directory trace as Jackies/Vickies; no independent 2024-2026 evidence found
- Vickies Crew House address given (35 Kingston Ave) is a residential two-family property per Zillow/Trulia listings, not a listed lodging business; phone/email trace only to the defunct americancrewhouses.webs.com directory, no 2024-2026 confirmation
- americancrewhouses.webs.com the directory site the three names above trace back to; domain no longer resolves (checked 2026-08-19, DNS NXDOMAIN)
- crowsnestnewport.com (standalone domain) listed as the Crow's Nest's website by mycrewkit.com and a 2022 guide article, but the domain no longer resolves (checked 2026-08-19, DNS NXDOMAIN); the current operator is the Seamen's Church Institute at seamensnewport.org, listed above
- Good Will Engine Company hostel hostel-style stays including a studio apartment, but located in Providence, RI, roughly 30 miles from Newport, outside the hub area
- Smilers Crew House / Cotton Crew Housing surfaced in a mycrewkit.com search for 'Newport' listings but are Fort Lauderdale-area crew houses (Cotton is one block from Rybovich in West Palm Beach), wrong hub
- Newport Harbor Hotel and Marina mentioned as a crew fallback in the 2022 industry guide, but it is a full-service hotel priced well above crew-house rates and not marketed to crew specifically, out of scope for this list
Checked by hand on 19 August 2026. Prices move, houses fill and owners change; confirm the rate and the deposit terms in writing before you pay anything. If a listing here is wrong, email ahoy@joinyachting.com and it will be fixed within a week.

Straight answers
When should I arrive in Newport?
May. Newport is a summer port, May to October. Fewer boats and a shorter window than Fort Lauderdale, so less competition but less to compete for.
What is the cheapest bed in Newport?
The Crow's Nest at the Seamen's Church Institute, on its marine industry rate of USD 90 a night in peak season and USD 70 off season, capped at seven nights. Nothing found in this sweep undercuts it.
Are the old Newport crew house names still going?
No. Jackies, Moreens and Vickies still circulate online but all three trace back to one dead directory site and none could be re verified for 2025 or 2026. Treat any name found only on an old aggregator as unverified until it shows a live site or a recent review.
