Crew houses in Cape Town

Written by a working superyacht captain · rates seen on the day they are quoted

The two dedicated crew houses

Only one operator confirmed here runs its own crew house tied to a school. Ocean Star Sailing's bunk bed dorms, with separate female quarters, sit inside the school building at 14 West Quay Road at the V&A Waterfront. Students book it alongside the course itself and there is no public rate.

StarBoard Crew House on Rose Street in the City Bowl is a 16 bed purpose built crew house with a full time housekeeper and a weekly linen change. It shows up across My Crew Kit, Facebook and the other crew directories, but its own site would not load in this sweep, so its current rates could not be confirmed.

The other named schools in scope, Certified Superyacht Academy, Skipper Training SA, NaviTeach, Yachtmaster Ocean Sailing School and STC-SA, do not run a land based crew house. Certified Superyacht Academy and Get Onboard hand students a referral list of partnered providers and premium backpackers by email rather than a named property, and Yachtmaster's practical course accommodation is aboard the training yacht itself.

What a bed costs in 2026

Below crew house level, green crew and budget conscious hires fall back on general backpacker hostels a short walk or drive from the Waterfront. never@home and MOY Accommodation and Backpackers in Green Point start around R924 and R1,020 a night. DS Backpackers sits in Sea Point and V&A Backpackers in Woodstock. None of these are yacht specific. They are general tourist hostels that happen to sit in the right postcode and turn up repeatedly in crew searches. The band overall is roughly R900 to R1,200 a night for a hostel bed or a shared room, and contact us rates for the two dedicated crew houses.

Also checked
  • Certified Superyacht Academy Offers a free consultation and a 'worldwide crew agency & crew accommodation lists' resource for students, but no on-site crew house of its own was confirmed on certifiedtraining.co.za. One WebSearch summary described dormitory-style on-site accommodation, but this could not be verified on the academy's own pages and may be a conflation with an unrelated, Australia-based 'Superyacht Crew Academy' found during the same search. Office address: Unit 101, 4 Regent Road, Sea Point, Cape Town.
  • Get Onboard Superyacht Academy States it has 'partnered with some centrally located accommodation providers as well as premium backpackers' and forwards options by email on request; no dedicated crew house of its own found
  • Skipper Training SA Courses run from the V&A Waterfront and Simon's Town; no accommodation offering found on the school's own site
  • NaviTeach Training centres in Hout Bay, Simon's Town and Knysna; no student accommodation information published on site
  • STC-SA (Cape Town facility) Christiaan Barnard Street facility has an on-site canteen but no accommodation information published; students referred to contact the school directly
  • Yachtmaster Ocean Sailing School Practical-course fees include meals and accommodation, but only aboard the training yacht itself during the course, not land-based crew housing in scope for this list

Checked by hand on 19 August 2026. Prices move, houses fill and owners change; confirm the rate and the deposit terms in writing before you pay anything. If a listing here is wrong, email ahoy@joinyachting.com and it will be fixed within a week.

When to arrive and who hires

Beds are half the question. The season decides whether turning up is worth the airfare, and the agencies decide whether anybody reads your CV once you are there. Both are on the Cape Town hub page, along with the map and the daywork rate.

Your CV is the only thing that walks the dock when you can't.

I read a CV in about thirty seconds. Most green CVs lose me in ten. SeaPapers builds the one a captain expects: yacht fields, department templates, two-page discipline. Build yours before you book the flight.

Find out what your role needs before you book a single course.

Deck, interior, galley and engineering all want different paper, and half of it has an expiry date. See the list for your role, then keep every certificate, medical, passport and visa in one place a boat can open with one link, with an email before anything runs out.

Then store them in the SeaPapers folio.

Both live at SeaPapers. One account, one link to the boat.
